The focus of this
challenging piece is to explore the many different expressive nuances of
timpani – focusing particularly on frequent pitch changes and the
different types of sounds available from these magnificent instruments.
Rhythms employed in the work are based on the structure of Zortzico, a popular round dance in
quintuple meter from the Basque
region of northern Spain.
Hence the “Z” in the title.
